Buoyed with confidence from the previous weekend, we met just a bit further up the road at Yarlington Church, co-car park of the Bull. Another lovely morning and we opted for a 2 mile clockwise loop heading west then north around some very quiet countryside.

We are no newcomers to the village and have been known to frequent the pub from time to time, but on walking down the Lane passing the Bull we both both a bit shocked to see a new property being built. It was quite difficult to work out what it was. So domestic looking, we wondered why the need for a public toilet block in such a village. The thought continued to puzzle us as we headed off over the fields. On reaching Hicks Lane we headed north onto the Monarchs Way and the Leland trail, 2 long distance paths that criss-cross this area and we would come across many more times through the year. As the path reached the outskirts of Galhampton we turned back south and walked along the bottom of a large escarpment. As we looked up the ridge we saw our first sign of the wonderful wildlife we enjoy. A young deer stood watching us for a few seconds before realising Sully was with us. He’s not one to chase animals generally, and certainly not when outside his short sprinting range, but nevertheless the deer headed up the hills to safety this time untroubled by us.

There were no cattle out in the field today but on reaching the farm yard there were certainly lots of young calves in the shed, all noisily greeting us, no doubt hoping for food. Sully is generally more afraid of cows then they are of him, so keeping him close to me we skirted around keeping as much distance as possible from the cattle. We met the farmers in the main yard area, who had some day-old calves in pens, a lovely sight.

And so back to the toilet block. Our inquisitiveness got the better of us and a quick peep around the corner confirmed our stupidity as it is actually a small dwelling squeezed into a very tight spot. Totally not in keeping with the village in our views, but what do we know!
