October 19th, North Cadbury with Chris, Richard, Scrumpy, Maisie and Trevor
Many readers may have been concerned at the prolonged absence of one of our walkers who had previously been a stalwart , a fixture , part of the furniture you might even say…like a bulky old sideboard or a groaning rocking chair….so it was with great enthusiasm that he was welcomed back to the group! At least by Chris , Richard and Scrumpy. Everyone else sent their apologies.
After a false start at Mable’s Café, we parked by the post office stores in North Cadbury and then followed a very dry route round the lanes in a rough square to avoid the soggy ground arising from the weeks of rain we have suffered. The dogs remained on leads for the whole walk so Maisie and Scrumpy were in complete harmony the whole way round. We paused to admire a grand manor house at one point and a modest cottage over a mill stream at another. Several times we came across familiar stretches of walking, some from Leland Trail or Macmillan way and most likely a bit of Monarch’s Way….we certainly came this way on one of our walks from Yarlington.
The weather stayed fair and we had a general conversation the whole way round investigating Trevor’s heritage in Cornwall and Chris’s family from Dorset and Wales. I was looking forward to a visit to Northern Ireland to investigate Sarah’s roots. Aside from that, we ranged over film , philosophy , economics and politics in America and in Westminster and the local parish councils of Pitcombe and Castle Cary.
We returned by car to Mable’s and enjoyed a superb breakfast which was notable for Trevor’s choice of scrambled eggs. A rare departure from the Full English….so I have provided photographic evidence….Trevor’s arm is in shot!
Next week: Where’s Pete?
