Saturday 11th December TO, PC, PCL, Bill. Account accurately told by Pete

With Adrian absenting himself at the last minute, just three men and a dog left Oats Towers and, headed towards Fairfield via the Cricket Club.

Having encountered Somme-like conditions in the previous weeks, the general consensus was that we should stick to dry ground so we passed through Fairfield declining to use the communal outdoor gym equipment, and made our way via West Park to reach Station Road, which we followed a short distance before turning into Torbay Road. Striking out West we walked alongside the River Cary at which point we were overtaken by a lady jogger, who being known to Trevor was treated to some good natured banter. Continuing West we passed a newly built barn (ALLEGEDLY) containing a substantial family home before we turned left into Cooper’s Ash Lane where we stopped for the obligatory selfie beside an old but still used postbox. We then started to ascend a hill that Trevor reliably informed us was a ‘three-stopper ‘. It certainly was but at each stop we were treated to magnificent views across to Glastonbury and the Mendips.

Pushing on into Broadway Lane we skirted a field containing a flick of golden coloured sheep. Ignoring Pete’s advice to wear his golden wellies Phil approached two young chaps engaged in installing an electric fence to enquire as to the breed of these remarkably coloured animals. “Not sure” was the reply. “Why do you want to know?”

“Well, they’re such an unusual colour “ replied Phil.

“That’s because they’ve just come from the upper field where they have been rolling in the clay ground! They’re not golden at all - just dirty!”

So on that bombshell we followed a narrow track down to the Park once again remarking on the fine buildings here. Making a small detour to the newly restored Park Pond we then made our way to Denella’s Bakery.

“Steak and Kidney pie please “ called Trevor “We’ve run out!”

“Run out? It’s only a quarter to eleven! What else have you got?”

“Not much- what about some steak slices?”

“OK we’ll have three.”

“We’ve only got two. You’ll have to have a chicken and mushroom “

So mumbling threats about taking our future trade to Burns the Bread we retired to Chez Oats where we enjoyed a well-deserved cup of tea accompanied by a delicious homemade ginger and syrup sponge.
