DH, RW, Sully, Scrumpy

Continuing the recent music themed titles to the weekly walk report, this week was the first time Sully and Scrumpy have been back together following Sully’s recent operation, and they were certainly pleased to be reunited and be let off the lead to run alongside each other.

The forecast was for 100% chance of rain with thundery outbreaks so it was just the two founding fathers, who had to go out to walk their dogs anyway, who made it to today’s start line at Pitcombe. Others had cried off for various legitimate reasons, whilst some were enjoying the sun in the north of Scotland or taking it easy on the Spanish Costa’s. Fully togged up with waterproof clothing we set off with the intention of just walking until we were soaking wet then calling it a day and head off for breakfast. In typical British summer weather fashion, no sooner had we started walking the skies brightened and the chance of heavy rain dropped from 100% to 0% and the temperature increased a couple of degrees.

We headed out upstream by the side of the River Brue and it wasn’t long before we heard the tell tale splash of Golden Retriever entering the water. Sully was back in his own inimitable style!

Looping around anti-clockwise we were quickly back in Cole and heading out by the side of the former tea rooms of Cole Manor. Sully soon had his eyes on more water and by the sounds of it made another leap into the stream, unfortunately this time not such clean water. Nevertheless he was happy, although struggled to get out onto the near bank, so instead exited by the far bank and ran up and down trying to find a suitable way back across. Eventually he rejoined his mate Scrumpy and we were out onto the back road to Pitcombe. Passing under the old railway line twice we turned left and climbed through fields, past a very large bull who was thankfully having a Saturday morning rest, up to the A359. Crossing the road we continued climbing up a farm track which with the recent rain and become very claggy and slippery, until we were on top of the ridge with views across to the the back of the Newt.

We turned left, through an over complex double gate and passed across the front of Godminster Farm house, an impressive looking building although looking somewhat uninhabited and were soon out onto the top of Godminster Lane. A short way down and a left turn through New Barn Farm, with some very young calf’s in one of the barns and it was back down the hill towards Lisbury Farmhouse and back up the road to complete the walk in Pitcombe. Certainly far better weather than had been forecast and a greater distance walked than I expected. Although no GPS tracking this week the Fitbit clocked up 10,500 steps which equated to around 8.0 km.

There was only one thing left to do to round off the morning walk, and that was to head to Kimber‘s farm shop and cafe for a good cooked breakfast. It was over breakfast, at the unofficial AGM, that we discussed the continuance of keeping the walks a weekly event and also the possibility of grading our breakfasts in the future and providing a page of cafe reports.
