Saturday 28th May 2021 DH, RW, PCL, TO, AC, PC, Sully, Scrumpy & Bill
Bank holiday weekend and the forecast was looking good. So a bit of a drive down the A303 and the RV at Yandles Sawmills (not to be confused with Yandles garage- although it was by some). A quick astronomical navigation lesson later and the 6 of us and 3 dogs were ready to head of for today’s walk around the fields west of Martock. A bit of a mix of attire this week, some in shorts, some hats and some “woolly pullys”, the later being a little surplus to requirements soon on.
An anti-clockwise route today heading out of town alongside the Hinton Meads brook and through open fields with the early morning sun on our backs. Marked on the map as the Macmillan Way link, I have still to establish which actual parts of the way it links! Sully was in the water at every opportunity and although Scrumpy followed I’m not sure he encouraged her into the water at this point. We ambled along as usual, enjoying the open countryside and even stopping to watch a dear in the next field. A rather high style caused Adrian to show us his limbo skills, fields full of buttercups shone bright yellow in the sun and nettles along the footpath had the short wearers wishing they hadn’t! The River Parret was soon reached and the first major change of direction occurred as we met the road at Gawbridge Bow.
A short strength along the road before heading back into more fields, and nettles, we made our way south westerly before turning back East towards Martock. The monument on Ham Hill was clear in the distance as we took a command decision to cut the proposed walk a bit shorter and to ensure we made it back in good time for breakfast. Approaching Carys Mill bridge the gate out of the field was an extremely small gap, designed to let humans through but not animals. Bill & Scrumpy had no trouble but Sully had to be persuaded to crawl under a nearby gate, he wasn’t too happy.
The smell of bacon cooking soon filled the air and there was a hope by some we were back to Yandles, but afraid not, it was another cafe, The Ranch at the Southfork caravan site, which we walked past knowing it would be our turn soon. (Post walk Google and it looks a good breakfast, now to find a route that we can do sometime in the future).
The last leg of the walk was along the River Parrett trail before crossing the road and retracing our steps alongside the brook, back to the cars and breakfast! No tracking this week but a 2 hour walk so in the region of 3 1/2 to 4 miles.
We were soon seated in the outside area and ordering our Sawmillers full breakfasts and drinks. Plates full of freshly cooked bacon, sausage, eggs and more were soon delivered and eagerly tucked into. I must say one of the best and most reasonably priced breakfast we have had, we will certainly be back again soon.
