12th December Castle Cary
TO / RW / AC / Bill / Scrumpy
We set off from Adrian’s house towards Cary on Station Road which has not been improved by the massive expansion of housing on either side. We turned right down Torbay Road heading out of town, ignoring the inglorious dogmeat factory as we went. This lane is deceptively flat and easy walking so we were moving at pace. Even so we were overtaken by two elderly horses and their cheery owners. Alongside the lane runs the Cary brook and Trevor began a long reminiscence about the Great Castle Cary Duck Race which never quite reached a decisive conclusion – I don’t think Trevor’s plastic duck won.
We turned off the lane and gradually we found the gradient increasing and breathless walkers were pausing ever more frequently to look back on the view out across Dimmer. We possibly spent some time on a section of the Macmillan Way as we began the assault on Cock Hill. Each time we apparently reached the top of an incline more hill was revealed. We came across some men warming their hands by their burning brazier…not women’s libbers but more like striking miners. No time for cheery banter as we passed Abbey gardens and crossed the B3152 on the south side of Cary. Onwards and upwards.
When we reached Manor Farm we were allowed a brief rest for a photo call (which see below) . We then took a leisurely stroll down into Cary skirting the property of the Newt which can be identified by the fantastic quality fencing put up by the new owners to protect the public from accidentally walking on their land and tripping over a blade of grass.
No muesli or yoghurts available for breakfast so we ate a combination of steak slices or cheese and bacon pastries – delicious straight from the baker’s heated cabinet. Another fine walk in good company – Bill and Scrumpy agreed that steak slices are preferable to winalot.
