Dodging the showers

Despite a really good run of weather for our weekly rambles I guess it was inevitable there would be a wet one sooner or later. An earlier start at 0800 this week would allow time to complete the prescribed route and make it to to Kimbers Farm Shop Cafe in time for breakfast.

Starting on Dancing Lane the route took us through fields behind the houses up to the rear of the King Arthur’s School sports fields before heading north towards Shepton Montague. The heavy rains has made the fields slippery and as the path headed along the edge of a mature field of maize, the rain brushing off the large plants got us all quite wet. Sully spent most of his time hiding in the corn, only occasionally popping back onto the track to check he was not been left behind.

At the end of the ridge the route down to the road was especially well maintained. A strip of fenced off land, good quality grass & regularly mowed skirted around a very impressive looking Farm complex.

The walk back along the lower road was probably one of the longest road walking stretch to date, but it allowed time to discuss in great length the recently announced start up project to turn the old S & D railway line between Wincanton and Pitcombe into a walking/cycle track, similar to the Sturminster to Dorchester or the many branch routes on the Portishead to Cheddar old track bed.

once back in the cars a quick dash up to Kimbers Farm shop coincided with a very heavy storm. Perfect timing! Breakfast was well received, when it eventually was served. Strange times trying to keep all customers happy and still provide a normal service.
