A bright Saturday morning was booked for our first walk with the good ladies, and as with all good planning, the day was almost perfect, although slightly muddy underfoot in places. Accompanied by 6 dogs this week, we headed of from the Bruton car park and up to the station where we met Pete & Muriel, who opted for a cleaner parking spot. Heading along platform 1, we bumped onto old friend of us all, Harry Mills, on his morning dog walk. It was then down to the River Brue at Batt’s hole and out over the fields towards the dam. Sully led the charge of those interested in a quick dip, but with a strong flow and no doubt chilly water, non of the dogs stayed in for too long.
Initial thoughts that the ladies would stride out and lead the pack were mostly wrong, as the group of thirteen passed under the railway, around the dam and started the slow and steady climb upwards. Quite wet and muddy in places and some slippery sections caused some anxious moments. A gated crossing point caused everyone to bunch up and so the opportunity for the weekly selfie was grabbed. The next crossing point caused the most mirth as once again the two retrievers needed help negotiating the cattle grid. The gaps between the slats on the stile to the side were too small and the walkable edge of the cattle grid was too narrow when you have 4 feet to coordinate. Sully being his normal stubborn self, steadfastly refused to be picked up as he was the last time we came this way, so in the end he managed to tiptoe (or should that be tippaw) along the edge. With all humans and dogs successfully over, it was a steady drop down through the woods, Durslade Farm and the Bruton veg patch back to the cars. A good 3 miles walked and appetites built up ready for the next stage of the day.
Having returned home to wash down dogs and get scrubbed up, we reconvened at The White Post, Rimpton for our Christmas lunch. A great 4 course meal was thoroughly enjoyed by all, a perfect way to round off a good day.
Merry Christmas all and thanks for all your company this year.
