Big Field

Having spent the previous two weekends carrying out an extensive survey of the topography of Wyke and Alhampton we set off with relative confidence.

A friendly downhill start, which descended into Wyke, was our first step, then a left before we crossed the river Brue. This opened up to a flat walk between the river and the railway line.

We managed to spot three trains as we made our way to Castle Cary station. Whilst we walked along this path, we came to an expanse of windswept savannah known as the BIG FIELD.

We set off in good heart although the end seemed just a speck in the distance; however, the cold steel of determination drove us forward getting ever closer to the golden light that shone at the end of this green eternity.

After this Herculean task, we emerged triumphant but exhausted with the group spread over some distance.

Then it was right off to Sutton and Alhampton and the tin church and ponds where Sullivan showed a huge amount of restraint having read the “Do not enter“ sign.

The only thing left was the trudge up to Casa Oats and a continental breakfast with sausages from Germany, Spanish omelette and English burnt toast.

A nice way to spend a Saturday morning.
